Best Time of Year & Time of Day for a Badlands Elopement
Any time of year is the best time to elope in Badlands National Park! My favorite time though is mid-October. Summer can be very hot With the most visitors. If you’re looking for a more private experience, I would choose any of the other three seasons. Spring and winter can be a bit unpredictable but if timing is right the uniqueness of the season can be very rewarding!
- Spring – Spring can bring mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and wildflowers, making this a great season for eloping in the Badlands. However, one thing to keep in mind during the spring is the potential for rain. The park’s unique soil composition creates a thick, sticky mud known as “gumbo” when wet, which can quickly make hiking off the beaten path challenging. This dense mud clings to boots, adding weight and making movement more difficult, so proper footwear and an awareness of recent weather conditions are essential.
- Summer – Gorgeous sunsets but high temperatures; plan for early morning or late evening ceremonies. Early morning if you would like the least amount of people around.
- Fall – Like I Said this is my favorite time to Elope In Badlands National Park. There are certain areas where you can catch some very beautiful fall leaves. The temperatures are very mild and the crowds are much quieter.
- Winter – A unique, moody setting, but be prepared for unpredictable weather cold temperatures, and even snow!
- Time of Day:
- Sunrise – Offers the most privacy and soft, romantic lighting.
- Sunset – Warmer tones and dramatic skies, though slightly busier.

What You Need to Know Before Eloping in Badlands
- Permits – You’ll need a special use permit from the National Park Service to elope in Badlands National Park. These are $100. You may download a permit application online. There are two types of permits, a short form and a long form. The short-form is used for small-scale events, such as wedding photos. The long-form permit should be submitted for larger events such as commercial filming.
- Weather Considerations – The park can be extremely windy in the spring and winter, especially in open areas. During the winter, the ether can dip below freezing quite regularly. And in the summer temperatures can rise to the 90s and above during the day.
- Accessibility – Some locations require a short hike, so wear comfortable shoes. The park’s maintained trails do not exceed 10 miles so you can capture many of your photos with just a quick walk from the road. However, if you are looking for a private Area it’s easy to find a secluded space because most of the visitors stick to the locations closest to the road.
- Leave No Trace – Respect nature by sticking to trails and packing out any waste.

Tips for the Best Elopement Photos
- Choose Flowing Attire – Dresses that move with the wind create beautiful, ethereal shots. But consider the season and bring a warm coat or boots if needed!
- Prepare for Wind – Wind can be an incredible asset in an elopement photoshoot if planned for properly. I personally love the romantic, windswept look—it adds movement, emotion, and an element of natural beauty to the images. The gentle sway of a flowing dress or veil caught in the breeze can create breathtaking, cinematic moments. Letting your hair down with a veil can be stunning. Rather than fighting the wind, embrace it!
- Embrace the Landscape – For your Badlands National Park elopement, We will create wide shots to showcase the vast scenery and close-ups for intimate moments. All will be scenery-rich encompassing the outstanding views.
- Golden Hour Magic – Plan your ceremony around sunrise or sunset for the best lighting. Sunrise will yield the most privacy!
